The Evil Mountain

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

“For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities…” Col. 2:15

“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations!” Isaiah 14:12

“When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.” Colossians 1:16

When you put the above scriptures together a story emerges: 1) God creates the earth and universe in a perfect state (Gen 1:1). 2) He then places angelic majesties of immense power within His creation to rule over it and administer it for him (Col 2:15). 3) Then Lucifer rebelled convincing around a third of the angels to follow him (Is 14:12). 4) Christ endures the cross, dies and rises again, redeeming mankind and defeating all the power of Satan along with the fallen angels who followed him (Col 1:16).

Undoubtedly, amongst those rebellious angels were some of those “rulers and authorities” God had initially placed over His creation. I am convinced that the darkest places on this planet where the greatest human suffering occurs are the locations where God originally established these angelic majesties. They are now fallen and work to create as much sin, destruction and misery as they can. When we do spiritual warfare over a community, we are usually dealing with one of these dark, spiritual strongmen. (See Ephesians 6:12)

I am convinced that one of these strongmen is resident here in Butte and recently ran across an article in the local newspaper that offers some confirmation. Apparently there was no Native American presence here in Butte, but the nearby tribes did have a name for Big Butte, the extinct volcano that stands over the city (and from which Butte gets its name) calling it the “Evil Mountain”. Apparently, if an Indian wanted to commit suicide he would go to the top of Big Butte for his last view of life. Often we find, wrapped up in Native American legends, confirmation of where local spiritual strongmen are located and it seems that Butte, Montana is one of those locations.
